Calendula, also known as “pot marigold,” is a plant with beautiful bright orange flowers. It is now cultivated in various regions of France and, more recently, in Belgium.

It is a medicinal plant, meaning it has traditionally been used in pharmacy for the preparation of remedies.

A symbol of gentleness, calendula is especially renowned for baby skincare.

At Siprès, we use calendula in the form of an oil macerate.

Properties

Anti-inflammatory, soothing, and healing. Thanks to its natural content of carotenoids, flavonoids, and faradiol, calendula macerate helps soothe skin inflammation, support the regeneration of damaged skin, and calm skin that is irritated, sun-reddened, or prone to itching.

Nourishing and softening. Since calendula flowers are macerated in organic sunflower oil, calendula macerate is naturally rich in omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. It helps nourish the skin while improving its suppleness and elasticity.

The properties of calendula macerate make it a valuable ingredient in natural skincare products designed for delicate skin, particularly that of babies, such as our Baby & Nursing Care Oil and Lavender Flowers Balm.

History

The French name souci (marigold) is not related to worries or concerns, but derives from the Latin sol sequia (“following the sun”). The flowers open at sunrise and close at sunset. The name Calendula refers to calendae (“little calendar”), as the plant flowers continuously for several months.
Calendula was already highly regarded as a remedy during Roman times, notably by Pliny the Elder, and later in the Middle Ages by Hildegard of Bingen, for its many beneficial properties.

Origin

The calendula flowers (also known as marigold flowers) are grown on a small plot of land on the outskirts of Brussels by a passionate producer who specializes in the cultivation and maceration of local medicinal plants.

Once harvested, the fresh calendula flowers are macerated by our partner producer in organic sunflower oil sourced from France. This process allows the plant’s beneficial compounds to be extracted without distillation.

Extraction

The calendula macerate is prepared by our producer through a solar maceration process. After harvesting the flowers, they are infused in organic high-oleic sunflower oil inside a glass container exposed to sunlight. The macerate is then carefully filtered.
