At every back-to-school season, head lice make their return. This time of year brings renewed interest in natural ways to prevent lice in children. Many parents turn to lavender essential oil, known for its natural repellent properties. However, despite being natural, essential oils are highly concentrated products that require caution, especially for young children.

Why use lavender essential oil against lice?

Lavender is one of the most commonly used essential oils in the fight against lice. Its effectiveness mainly comes from an aromatic molecule: linalool, naturally present in certain varieties of lavender.

👉 Linalool acts as a disruptive scent for lice: it interferes with their olfactory sensors, prevents them from properly locating their host and creates an environment that encourages them to move away.

Fine lavender, lavandin, spike lavender: what’s the difference?

There are different types of lavender essential oils: fine lavender, lavandin and spike lavender.

All three can be used against lice as they all contain this key aromatic molecule, linalool.

However, they do not have the same composition or tolerance for children.

  • Fine lavender (true lavender): the gentlest, best tolerated by young children.
  • Spike lavender: the most powerful against lice and nits (ovicidal effect), but reserved for children over 6 years old.
  • Lavandin: the most economical and therefore ideal for daily prevention, but not recommended for children under 3.

Why avoid applying essential oils directly to a child’s skin?

An essential oil is extremely concentrated in aromatic molecules: several kilos of flowers are needed to produce just a few millilitres of essence. A single drop already contains a high concentration of active compounds.

👉 In children, the skin is particularly thin and permeable. Pure essential oils pass through the skin barrier very quickly. Daily application behind the ears or on the neck can therefore represent a long-term risk.

How to use lavender safely for lice prevention?

❌ To avoid: daily direct application, pure, on children’s skin (especially behind the ears or on the neck as often recommended).

✅ To prefer: place 1 to 2 drops of fine lavender essential oil on:

  • the t-shirt collar,
  • a headband or a scrunchie,
  • the corner of the school bag.

This allows the protective scent to diffuse near the hair without risk. This method limits transdermal absorption while maintaining the repellent effect.

What additional steps to take in case of lice?

In addition to lavender, adopt simple and natural habits:

  • Attach the long hair.
  •  Regularly pass a fine-toothed comb through wet hair.
  • Do an oily hair treatment once a week with the Nourishing Hair Oil Treatment : the combination of plant oils and spike lavender essential oil encourages lice to leave the scalp while helping detach nits for easier removal with a fine comb. Good news: our treatments emulsify with water and rinse out in a single shampoo, without a greasy effect.
  • Wash bed linen and accessories (hats, scarves) at 60°C in case of infestation.

In summary: prevent lice naturally and safely

Essential oils, and lavender in particular, are effective natural allies against lice, but they must be used with care. True lavender is the gentlest option for young children, while spike lavender is the most effective but reserved for older children.

👉 For safe prevention: avoid applying pure essential oil on children’s skin, prefer diffusion on textiles and combine with good hair care habits.
