Dry skin in winter: which plant oils should you use to nourish and protect it effectively?

In winter, sebum production decreases this is known as “lipid stress”, which puts the barrier function of the hydrolipidic film to the test. Transepidermal water loss increases, the skin becomes dehydrated, more sensitive, and tends to feel tight, tingle and turn red. Cold weather, wind and temperature changes indoor heating, hot showers and so on accelerate skin dehydration even further.

The solution ? Do not damage the hydrolipidic film any further, and instead strengthen the skin barrier.

To do this, we focus on plant oils rich in oleic fatty acids omega-9, a fatty acid naturally present in sebum. Oils rich in oleic acid have very interesting nourishing and softening properties for dry or dehydrated skin. They help reinforce the hydrolipidic film, create a protective layer on the surface of the skin, improve skin comfort and limit transepidermal water loss.

And of course, we do not forget the basics: drink enough water, eat seasonal organic fruit and vegetables, and get enough sleep.

FACE

To avoid weakening the hydrolipidic film any further, first avoid harsh makeup removers containing sulfates and instead cleanse the face with the Cleansing Oil. This oil removes makeup and cleanses the skin very gently, without stripping it.

Then apply your usual Floral Toners ,suited to your skin type.

For facial care, the star oil of winter is our beautiful French Plum Face Oil. Made up of nearly 80% omega-9, it is the perfect ally for dry or dehydrated skin. Its natural frangipane scent also makes it an incredibly comforting treatment. We recommend it as a night treatment throughout the winter months.

BODY

To avoid “crocodile skin” in winter, first pay close attention to the composition of your shower gel. Conventional cleansing products very often contain irritating surfactants such as sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate that disrupt the hydrolipidic film. Choose instead a superfat cold-process soap or a naturally derived liquid soap.

Exfoliating once a week helps remove dead skin cells, supports the skin’s natural renewal process and smooths the skin. It is your winter ally against crocodile skin on the legs.

For the body too, we favour high-quality plant oils in winter local and first cold-pressed, rich in omega-9.

Siprès has developed a body oil specially formulated for winter, made with French plant oils rich in omega-9 such as sweet almond oil, sunflower oil and olive oil. Nourishing Winter Body Oil  also contains plant oils rich in omega-3 to provide skin weakened by the cold with anti-inflammatory and soothing properties hemp and camelina plant oils.
